How uncertainty transforms our lives
A map of the dynamics between uncertainty and affect
At a fundamental biological level, we live in a world of radical uncertainty. How we relate to that uncertainty determines everything about our lives. Our most basic survival instinct is to reduce uncertainty, but there are many ways that this relationship can be enacted.
Specific emotional states are produced by these relationships. Whether we feel harmonised or discordant, flowing or full of friction, depends on our relationship to uncertainty.
The central thesis of The Emotional Athlete is that these relationships can be understood, design and aligned with an individual’s performance and learning goals.
This project is in an early phase, building out a theory of emotion that encompasses contemporary academic works.
Today, I will just share a diagram that describes some of these relationships between uncertainty and affect. This diagram is based on an interdisciplinary reading of literature on emotions and their antecedents.
